Borat Movie: Azamat through Visual Story Telling

Introduction

Borat is a 2006 mockery comedy that features Borat Sagdiyev, and Ken Davitian who are from Kazakh recording their real interactions with Americans.  Borat (Sacha Baron Cohen) is a Kazakh TV reporter who is accompanied by his camera shy producer Azamat (Ken Davitian). The two are on a fact finding mission on “the glorious country, the US” and are meant to make a documentary on the same for their Kazakh TV. From the start, Azamat is Borat’s obese film producer. The point of the movie’s funniest laughs comes from the characters and their visual elements that are meant to surprise the viewer. This is well portrayed by Ken Davitian who is cast as Azamat, Borat’s producer. The aim of this paper is to discuss and highlight Azamat’s primary representation by visual elements that are meant to surprise Borat viewers.

Ken Davitian

Ken Davitian is cast as Azamat Bagatov in the movie Borat. He is shown as the producer of Borat’s documentary. In fact he is the “The fat guy from Borat.”  Azamat speaks Armenian as well as using some common phrases from the Slavic language.

When a movie is shot well, the experience is a pure joy to watch and this can be said of the movie Borat. In this paper, we will consider the use of color, movement, rhythm and lightning on the movie Borat with a special mention of Azamat.

Visual Description

Film is a visual art. There are various ways in which visual techniques are used in films, in this case Borat, to enhance its story. In the movie, there are some flashes of black and white that contrasts with slices of color emphasizing the graphic nature of the film as well as the medium it was set on.

Color

Color plays a significant role in the movie as does the actual movement of the scenes. There is the use of color, for example on Azamat as a character with use of dramatic contrasts in color is always in full color. This is mainly to emphasize on the feel of the scene. The use of a green-yellow bikini on Azamat is mainly to emphasize on contrast and how he is “lost” in America culture. However, there is the appearance of a random color which is unsettling. This seems to be a definite intention of the director. The colors on Azamat are specifically placed starting with his clothes. There is the use of intense color on Azamat, against say in the beach, showing how the colors are specifically placed. Color is also used to contrast between the Azamat’s naked body and his collection of medals strapped around his body.

Movement

Usually in any film, there is the movement of cameras or the way in which the player is moving. Is it vertically, horizontally, or diagonally? This helps to determine the level’s movement. In this film, there is more to using the horizontal movement. This is because this kind of movement usually gives the sense if stability with an increased visual intensity. However, all these movements seem to contrast one another. For example when Azamat and Borat are naked chasing each other through a crowd, there is the use of horizontal movement but later which is changed to vertical movement to contrast the pictures and improve visual intensity.

Rhythm

There is the use of visual rhythm in Borat. Just like in music, there is the change of rhythm to modify its intensity. For example before Azamat starts running naked, there is a slow rhythm but this changes as they start chasing each other in the crowd naked. This is a contrast in rhythm. The level of rhythm is basically used to increase or decrease the intensity.

Lighting

Recording is done by use of photographic instruments and thus light is recorded. The cinematographer in this movie tries to have control over lighting conditions and sometimes there is creation of mood and effect as well as consistent continuity over the film. This can be seen when Azamat is at the beach with some skimpy dressed women and during the cockroach moment at the hotel.

Conclusion

The visual basis of any film gives it the universal power of communication and Borat is no different. The use of visual elements in the movie Borat in fact accounts for the movie’s success as any film is always about visualization. The highlight of the movie is however; its funniest laughs that come from this character’s visualization and his visual elements that are meant to surprise the viewer.
